💡 Tile Tip

Ordering extra tiles can help cover cutting, breakage, and future repairs.

How Does the Tile Calculator Work?

This tile calculator first calculates the total area you want to cover by multiplying the length by the width. It then calculates the area covered by one tile based on the tile dimensions you enter.

The calculator divides the total project area by the area covered by one tile to estimate the number of tiles required. A waste allowance is then added to help account for cuts, breakage, damaged tiles, and installation mistakes.

For the most accurate project estimate, check the coverage information printed on the tile packaging. Tile manufacturers may package different quantities of tiles in each box.

How Much Extra Tile Should You Buy?

5% Simple rectangular areas
10% Most standard projects
15% More corners and cuts
20% Complex patterns

Tile Calculation Example

Imagine you have a 12 × 10-foot room. The total floor area is 120 square feet. If you choose 12 × 24-inch tiles, each tile covers 2 square feet.

You would need approximately 60 tiles before adding waste. With a 10% waste allowance, the recommended purchase would be around 66 tiles.

Tile Calculator FAQs

How do I calculate how many tiles I need?

Measure the length and width of the area you want to tile and multiply them to find the total area. Then calculate how much area one tile covers and divide the total area by the tile area. Add extra tiles for waste and cuts.

How much extra tile should I buy?

A 10% waste allowance is a common starting point for many straightforward tile projects. More complicated layouts, diagonal patterns, small tiles, and rooms with many corners may require additional material.

How many 12×12 tiles do I need for 100 square feet?

A 12×12-inch tile covers 1 square foot. Therefore, 100 square feet requires 100 tiles before waste. With a 10% allowance, you would need approximately 110 tiles.

How many 12×24 tiles do I need for 100 square feet?

A 12×24-inch tile covers 2 square feet. For 100 square feet, you would need approximately 50 tiles before waste. With 10% extra material, the estimate becomes approximately 55 tiles.

Should I buy extra tiles?

Yes. Keeping a few spare tiles can be useful because tiles can break during installation or become damaged later. Matching the exact tile can also become difficult if the product is discontinued.

Does this calculator include grout?

The calculator provides a rough grout estimate based on the project area and tile size. Actual grout requirements depend on tile thickness, grout joint width, joint depth, and the manufacturer’s coverage information.
