It is usually a good idea to keep a small amount of extra paint for touch-ups and future repairs.

How This Paint Calculator Works

This paint calculator estimates the amount of paint needed to cover the four walls of a room. It calculates the total wall area using your room length, width, and wall height, then subtracts the area occupied by doors and windows.

The remaining paintable area is multiplied by the number of coats you select. The calculator then divides that figure by the estimated coverage of your chosen paint to provide an approximate amount of paint needed.

Paint Calculator FAQs

How much paint do I need for a 12×12 room?

A typical 12×12-foot room with 8-foot walls has approximately 384 square feet of wall area before subtracting doors and windows. With two coats, the actual amount of paint depends on the paint’s coverage and the size of the openings.

How many gallons of paint do I need for one room?

Many standard rooms require around 1 to 3 gallons for two coats, but the exact amount depends on wall dimensions, doors, windows, paint coverage, and the number of coats.

Should I buy extra paint?

Yes. Buying a little extra can be useful for future touch-ups. Paint coverage can also vary depending on the wall surface, paint type, application method, and color change.

Does this calculator include doors and windows?

Yes. Enter the number and approximate dimensions of your doors and windows, and their area will be subtracted before the paint estimate is calculated.
